Spasmodeus: Drums

Spasmodeus is a Percusiton from the planet Nippatwis. The planet follows a peculiar orbit around a very distant sun. Percusitons are, to some, a more primitive race. Not so primitive that they were eating bugs n twigs, but not so advanced that they didn't believe in magic. They held on to their ancient ideals and traditions, never analyzing or questioning anything of their existence. The people believe that the twin suns are two living gods, who bring light and warmth to their planets before resting to restore their energy. All life is a direct result of their influence. They even thought the stars in the sky were only put there to give them something pretty to look at on the rare occasions when neither sun was visible.

Spasmodeus parents, Palbobeus and Dinavius, knew better. They were beings of science, although their work was not welcome or appreciated on this world. Many of their studies contradicted Percusitonian beliefs in the twin gods Spizzy and Skizzy. They were considered heretics and blasphemers. They had to conduct all their research in hiding, lest they be exiled or worse by their "fellow beings." One day, Palbobeus was using his version of a telescope, and thru it saw another world, orbiting a sun very far from them. There were giant metal objects coming and going from the planet all the time. There was other life out there. They were not alone, put here solely to appease sun gods. They were part of a vast universe, one teeming with life.

He came to his wife. "No longer can we hide in the shadows. If we do not show this to our people, we will go nowhere until we go extinct. I cannot allow our species legacy, to be nothing."

They agreed, that this would probably not end well. Their son, Spasmodeus, was given to Plaggulfigglegutz, who was another like them. He was to raise and educate Spasmodeus in secret, so he could carry on in his parents place, should events go wrong.

And go wrong it did. Their announcement, denouncing traditional beliefs for a more open minded scientific view of the universe, was met with outrage. How dare they mock everything their people have believed in since the beginning of time?  The two stood angrily and said that if they could not evolve their minds, they would bring about the end of the species.

But no one listened. They were dragged off, imprisoned, and later executed for treason by being burned alive, which is one of the very few ways to actually kill a Percusiton.

The death of his parents embittered Spasmodeus towards his people. What kind of backwards thinkers respond to peaceful logic and intellect with violence? It was an absurdity. But he could do nothing. Exposing himself as their son would only bring about his end. So he spent his years learning all he could from Plaggulfigglegutz, and when he could learn no more, he went home to continue his parents work. Eventually, he found a secret basement, where his parents greatest achievements remained hidden, so as not be destroyed, as was much of their work after their demise. Spasmodeus spent all his time finishing the work, including a craft his father had devised to travel to the far off planet he had seen. But he became torn, between leaving his people behind in obscure ignorance, or helping them understand the truth. He fought over the decision of what to do.

Until one fateful day, when a ship parted the clouds and landed in the middle of the planets largest city. Two strange being emerged from the craft, as Spasmodeus watched from a hidden vantage point. One appeared a large bird, with flesh covered in scars and all sorts of metal parts and wires. The other appeared to glide off the craft in a large white lab coat, and the most frightening mask he had ever seen, and assumed could only be covering up an even more frightening face.

They came to the center of the town and began to speak wonders. Of an immense universe they lived in, that was just one of many, all teeming with different variations of life, and it was their purpose to bring them all together in peace. "Finally", he thought, "Now my people will have to listen, and my parents will not have died in vain. They will be exonerated, and I will use their work to advance our civilization."

But they didn't. They lashed out. "Decievers!", they cried. "Sent by our gods to test our resolve! Leave our world, we will not be fooled!"

Spasmodeus was beside himself. How could creatures be so willfully ignorant?

He couldn't take it anymore. He gathered up as much research as he could, and left the planet in his fathers craft. Let the Percusitons live in ignorance until all their nips are twisted and they are drained of all their mercurial blood. He made his way to the planet his father had located....and was met with a sight far more spectacular than anything he could have imagined. The world was essentially a pit stop on the way to many greater systems. He was a foreigner, with no true knowledge of how the universe works. All around him were indecipherable words, and strange languages. He finally found a merchant whom he could understand, and acquired a much better craft, and some volumes of information regarding the universe. As he read about the previously unfathomable elements of the universe, he followed the two strange visitors that had been chased off his planet. Thru many galaxies he followed them, until he saw their path come to halt on an isolated blue world. When he finally caught up with them, he asked to join them and learn from them. He wanted to be the greatest Percusiton to ever live. they rejoiced, saying they could quit the Urth Mewzik project and use his craft to leave this world they were stuck on. But Spasmodeus had broken the ship down and reconstructed it into drums to join their Urth Mewzik band, unaware they had been stranded here. But they allowed him to join them anyways, and embraced him into their group, after a harsh scolding.
